A car with a fax machine inside of it made for an eye-popping concept in the 1990s, but is now a reality thanks to Internet-connected cars and online fax solutions.
In a May 2014 post in car blog Jalopnik, site contributor Patrick George chronicled the Isuzu 4200R, which was a concept car that debuted at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show. It first made waves in the auto industry for its sleek design and powerful engine, although perhaps its defining feature was that it featured a fax machine built right into its design.
Although the 4200R never made it into production, the ability to send a fax from a mobile motor vehicle is now possible thanks to the rise of Web-enabled cars and fax over IP. A 2013 report from BI Intelligence predicted that there will likely be around 60 million connected cars in existence by 2018, and IHS Automotive said the number of motor vehicles with Internet connectivity will probably rise from 23 million this year to 152 million by the end of this decade.
"They're getting to a point where mechanical engineering excellence is being commoditized," said Gartner automotive analyst Thilo Koslowski, according to Time. "Cars all drive well at this point. These in-vehicle technologies give car companies a way to differentiate their offerings but it also actually meets new needs that consumers have to extend the digital lifestyle inside the vehicle."
