With all of the new regulations and compliance guidelines healthcare organizations are being asked to follow, the threat of a data breach is supposed to be reduced. Yet, they seem to be increasing at a rapid pace. In the Ponemon Institute's recent Patient Privacy and Data Security study, 90 percent of respondents admitted to having at least one data breach over the last two years, and 38 percent of those reported having more than five breaches in that same period.
Although only 46 percent of breaches were caused by employee mistakes, three quarters of those surveyed reported viewing employee negligence as the number one threat to data security. The actual biggest threat to healthcare information, according to the report, is lost or stolen computing devices, which accounted for 49 percent of data breaches.
Data breaches like these could be avoided if health providers and insurers stored patient information in the cloud instead of on physical devices that can be misplaced or taken. With many offices still needing to make the switch to electronic health records, now is the perfect time for healthcare organizations to implement a fax-over-IP solution.
FoIP solutions allows providers to fax electronic health records and other documents to patients over the Internet and store messages in an encrypted, dedicated server. The information on the server can be kept there as long as an organization wants, creating an archived database of records that is secure and private. FoIP providers like FaxCore utilize HIPAA compliant storage solutions, ensuring organizations are always following industry guidelines.
