3 FoIP myths that just aren’t true

There are a lot of misconceptions about FoIP that we'd like to clear up.

As technology becomes more advanced and complex, the average person begins to understand it less. People have a lot going on in their regular lives, and expending effort to study up on how their new cellphone works just isn't an effective use of their time. That being said, this lack of knowledge often leads to problems.

Specifically, people often jump to conclusions about the technology they don't understand. But just like how the myth stating that cellphones cause cancer was eventually shown to likely be false, these misconceptions are generally put to rest with a little education. On a similar note, we've heard a lot of things about fax over IP that just aren't true.

To that end, we'd like to use this time to put to rest the top three myths about fax over IP that are completely false:

"FoIP integrates perfectly into the average office."

Myth #1: It's as inconvenient as legacy fax

This is less of a myth and more of a conclusion people jump to about the technology. While faxing served society for many years as a fantastic means of communication, newer innovations such as email and texting have made legacy fax systems seem old and outdated. When FoIP came around, people transplanted these feelings onto the newer technology because they assumed it would work the same as legacy fax systems.

This just isn’t the case. So, what is FoIP? FoIP is an online fax service for businesses that allows administrators to send and receive faxes as if they were emails, all from the comfort of their computer or mobile device. Considering 68 percent of Americans have a smartphone right now, FoIP integrates perfectly into the average office.

Myth #2: It's not reliable

This myth can be seen across multiple digital services, especially when it comes to upgrading systems as old as legacy fax machines. There are still a lot of people out there who don't really understand how the Internet works, and as such, there's a misconception floating around that documents can be lost in cyberspace when using FoIP or other digital means of communication.

There's nothing more complex than modern technology. The digital world can seem a little complicated.

Again, this simply isn't true. Modern FoIP systems track when a fax over IP is sent and when it is delivered, which means that company officials can make sure that important correspondence reaches the intended recipient without delay. What's more, these systems have notifications that tell you when a document cannot be delivered, so nothing ever gets lost in transition.

Myth #3: You'll have to completely upgrade your current fax system

When business leaders hear about a revolutionary new technology, they often think about how much it's going to cost. Updating an entire office's hardware isn't cheap, and sticking with an older, less efficient system can seem a lot easier than upgrading. Thankfully, FoIP isn't one of these technologies.

While you will need to purchase a gateway to give your fax machine an Internet connection, you won't have to throw out all of those legacy devices that you've been collecting over the years. FoIP allows you to continue using these machines with online fax services for business, even as you move your business into the 21st century.
