Ironically, the cloud is still clouded in mystery. This uncertainty is felt by a lot of people. Many still live in fear of it while others are finding limitless success. More often than not, however, there is just a lot of confusion.
But this is typical of new technologies as they experience increasing adoption. There are a growing number of organizations that are figuring out how to leverage the cloud to their advantage. Companies are finding that they can achieve a significant ROI when investing in cloud-based assets, which is encouraging observers to do the same.
One of the most powerful ways to embrace the cloud is to apply it to a still-vital but under-supported channel – the fax. Fax machines are dated, clearly, but the technology behind them is still incredibly valuable. It is a secure way to transmit documents without having to involve email attachments. Email accounts have proven time and again to be lacking in protections. Yet it remains a popular connection because of its convenience. Smartphones can't fax, right? Wrong.
Thanks to cloud-based fax technology, it is possible to send faxes from IP and bring fax servers into the modern day. It is clear the sensitive files need to be conveniently sent and received, and it has become increasingly obvious that email is not up to the task. While some people may preach gloom and doom regarding the cloud, it is time to look past the stigmatization and begin leveraging it alongside the concept of faxing.
Cost savings just one small perk
Much of the uncertainty that surrounds the cloud has to do with the perceived reasons for moving there. Some people wrongly believe that the only reason to deploy a cloud initiative is to save money, with little regard for security. But while the cloud does facilitate some greater cost efficiency in a myriad of ways, this is more like the icing on the cake. Gartner analyst Gregor Petri, in his experience, has seen scarce amounts of financial motivation in comparison to the interest in operational advantages that many organizations have.
"We see very little of 'let's move workloads to the cloud so it is cheaper,'" Petri said to The Register contributor Tim Anderson. "Most of the workloads in the cloud are new ones. The promise of cloud computing for enterprises is that they can become digital enterprises, and move their core propositions to become digital."
This is the kind of attitude that businesses need to have in order to succeed in the present day. Organizations need to recognize the potential that the cloud has. It enables limitless productivity that is not bound to the actual office – something that the fax machine has not typically enjoyed. But by integrating cloud-based faxing into daily operations, it is possible to have it all: security, mobility and satisfaction.
