Email is a common occurrence in the world of enterprise. People are constantly sending and receiving messages on this channel. But why? Email is highly susceptible to data breaches and malicious hacking, but modern professionals still use it for almost every communication they engage in. According to Network World contributor Loek Essers, a recent study from Pew Research found that many professionals believe that they have to have email in order to fulfill their responsibilities.
"The end of email has been foretold many times, but despite these predictions of doom, U.S. workers can't seem to get rid of it," Essers wrote. "About six in 10 Internet-using workers in the U.S. list email as 'very important' to doing their jobs, topping the list of most important work tools."
But much of this reliance may stem from the misconception that email is as good as things get. This could not be further from the truth. Faxing is actually much safer and more effective than email, but people tend to avoid it because legacy systems are not inherently mobile. Opting to invest in cloud-based faxing can help to alleviate this issue.
Working remotely becomes more common
As 2015 gets started, an increasing number of professionals are finding success telecommuting rather than going into the physical office.
According to TMCnet contributor Maurice Nagle, the remote workforce is considered "a key cog in the wheel of industry."
"2014 saw more businesses embrace various tools like Web conferencing that have made telecommuting a very real option," Nagel wrote. "Heading into 2015, this is the time for resolutions. Many are in the market for a new job; some have circumstances that do not permit a daily commute and others simply want the freedom that working from a location of their choosing permits."
But this cannot happen without having the right communications tools in place. Email may have proven to be prevalent, but relying on it in remote working situations is not advisable. Email is often lacking in effective security and proper organization, making it inappropriate for many of the transmissions it is trusted to handle on a daily basis.
