A recent study by the Harvard Business Review Analytic Services found that companies rapidly adopting cloud computing are able to reduce complexity and increase business agility, allowing them to gain a competitive advantage. Of the more than 500 Harvard Business Review readers surveyed, 70 percent had already adopted cloud technologies and 74 percent of those respondents reported an increase in competitive advantage due to the cloud.
The leading driver behind cloud adoption was increase business agility, with 32 percent of respondents citing it as their top reason for implementing the cloud. Reduced cost, increased innovation and improved scalability were also mentioned as reasons for adopting the technology. According to the survey, 56 percent of respondents employing the cloud aggressively reported gaining a significant advantage in business.
"While cloud computing can help companies operate more efficiently, the real benefit comes from being able to capitalize on new opportunities more quickly than your competitors," the report stated.
According to the report, benefits of adopting cloud computing included simplified internal operations and the creation of new ways for employees to collaborate. More than two-thirds of respondents reported saving money as a result of the cloud, and 71 percent expect business complexity to be reduced with cloud computing.
