There are several telecom channels that are being challenged by the present day. That is not to say that they are obsolete – in fact, many of them are still essential. But due to the rate at which communications are changing as a whole, there is a growing need to reconsider how these methods of connection are facilitated, especially with so many channels moving online.
One technology that has seen a rapid evolution is faxing. Fax solutions are still a vital part of many industries, as they facilitate the quick dissemination of important documents. But the relative security of this channel has not aged as well as the concept has, creating challenges for organizations that rely on it.
The answer to these issues lies in cloud-based fax. Not only do the offerings from FaxCore enable businesses to better organize their fax-related documents, but they also create a much safer channel of transmission for these missives.
Dated faxing technology can lead to data breaches
According to ABC affiliate WABC, the pharmacy chain CVS recently found itself at the center of a fax-related scandal. In April, a food distributor in Queens began receiving prescription requests via fax that contained confidential patient information. Even after he had alerted the CVS to the error, he continued getting faxes – all linked to the same doctor who was the intended recipient, but in relation to several California CVS locations.
"You kind of wonder, if it's happening to you. If it's happening to other people," said Mike Pupo, the Queens resident at the center of the misdirected faxes. "When I go to my doctor and he fills out a prescription, I don't want it to go to some random person." Pupo also said that he was surprised CVS did not have better safeguards in place, and that – had he been a criminal – he could have made a lot of money by possessing this information.
Faxes can be used in scams, as well
But misdirected business faxes are not the only concern that has to be addressed. Just like other channels, faxes can leveraged in phishing campaigns, and the FBI is warning residents of Arizona to be on their guard for a specific scam.
According to Tucson News Now, false arrest warrants are being distributed by fax and email, demanding payment in order to avoid charges of missed jury duty and bank fraud, among other things. Situations like this and the CVS incident only drive home the need for secure faxing options. With so many malicious actors hiding in cyberspace and human error being so prevalent in many settings, organizations that still rely on faxing need to have the right tools at their disposal in order to circumvent possible breaches. Business faxing is still a major asset for a company to have, and secure, cloud-based or online fax line is a logical way to address modern issues.
