When we talk about worldwide problems and issues, email seems like it would be an unlikely topic. While it doesn't carry some of the same weight as other global situations, professionals in every country are likely finding email to be a barrier to productivity – even if they don't recognize it as such.

One of the biggest things working against email is the sheer volume of messages that are sent and received on this channel alone. According to recent research from Sennheiser, the British workforce alone finds itself buried in 1,728 unnecessary emails per employee every year.

''We are used to firing off emails for even the slightest thing," said Sennheiser marketing manager Charlotte Gaskin in an interview with ITProPortal. "But it seems like some of the more mundane requests can be avoided. Copying in lots of people to emails does seem to be a bugbear of British workers. Sometimes it's more effective to have a face to face conversation or just pick-up the phone. This way there's less room for misinterpretation as well."

According to InformationWeek contributor Shane O'Neill, people are "sending too much email." Part of this problem comes from an over-reliance on the channel that stems from its relative convenience. The solution to this worldwide issue is to invest in channels that are comparable to email but avoid its structure and shortcomings. Just such an asset can be found in cloud-based faxing. By taking a secure, necessary platform like the fax machine and converting it into a software-defined tool, businesses can enjoy greater levels of protection and productivity.
