When Richard Woo, a professional in the import/export business from California, began receiving faxed applications for loans meant for a Michigan credit union, he became very confused.
The documents were supposed to be delivered to Advia Credit Union, and at first, Woo assumed it was just an innocent mix up. Soon after, though, he noticed personal information like Social Security numbers, birthdays and net worth on the applications and realized this was a serious issue.
Woo visited the credit union's website and found that his fax number was listed as that of the business. Wanting to make sure the confusion was cleared up, he contacted Advia to inform them, but the information wasn't taken seriously.
"The representative [said] she'd take care of it and that's where it's been for the last week and a half," Woo said.
Currently, Woo is still receiving faxed applications with very sensitive information he has no reason to see. Woo is especially sensitive to this issue because he has been a victim of identity theft himself and knows what kind of harm can be done with the data he's being sent.
Protecting against data loss with cloud-based faxing
Research from Quocirca Insights reveals that while only 22 percent of organizations put a priority on securing their printing infrastructure, 63 percent have fallen victim to a printer-related data breach. While using a more secure faxing option can't keep a business from incorrectly listing your number as their own, it can help to keep sensitive faxed data secure when in transit.
Fax over IP services, like FaxCore's etherFax, store transmitted information in the cloud and use security measures created by the National Security Agency to protect important data. EtherFax employs an in-depth defense approach to protecting faxed information and data, using multi-layered encryption security systems. When a message is sent, information is delivered to a secure data center for processing. Once a transmission is completed, all content sent to the data center is destroyed, meaning sensitive information isn't sitting on an outside server waiting around to be compromised.
This added level of security is especially necessary in the healthcare, insurance and financial sectors where the majority of faxes sent contain important personal information. Customers will receive peace of mind in knowing that their sensitive data is being fiercly gaurded.
