Fax-over-IP eases doctors’ transition from paper to digital

Sending faxes can be modernized with the use of a fax-over-internet-protocol system.

While many industries still utilize faxes, the practice is probably most prevalent in the health sector. The government requires that doctors' offices schedule follow-up visits for patients released from hospitals within 14 days, and hospitals use faxes to ensure this happens. Faxes are also utilized by healthcare practices that utilize EMR systems to determine what services and treatments patients require.

This method of document transfer, however, has its drawbacks. Tom Samuels, CFO and CIO of Quality Independent Physicians, explained in an interview that faxes are easily lost, delivered to the wrong person or forgotten about entirely. On top of that, "the doctor may or may not be able to see that fax for two or three days and may not know about the patient's discharge until after the fact," said Samuels.

One way all of these problems can be remedied is with a fax-over-IP system. Fax Over IP allows documents that have been faxed to be sent directly to a person’s email, eliminating the chance of it being misdelivered. Companies like FaxCore offer FoIP services that work from existing fax machines but are more convenient than traditional faxes, while still being HIPAA compliant.
